The 10 Hiking Essentials

  1. Navigation: Map, compass, GPS device, or downloaded offline maps (like Gaia or AllTrails Pro).

  3. Sun Protection: Sunglasses, sunscreen (SPF 30+), lip balm with SPF, and a sun hat.
  4. First Aid Kit: Include personal medications, blister care, and basic wound supplies.
  5. Knife or Multi-Tool: Useful for gear repair, food prep, or emergencies.
  6. Fire: Lighter, matches, or fire starter in a waterproof container.
  7. Shelter: Emergency bivy, space blanket, or lightweight tarp—just in case you get stuck overnight.
  8. Extra Food: Bring more than you think you'll need—energy bars, trail mix, jerky, etc.
  9. Extra Water: And a way to purify more—like iodine tablets, a LifeStraw, or a filter.
  10. Extra Clothing: Include an insulating layer and rain protection. Weather can change quickly.
